Who We Are & Why Join

A community built around chemistry — and what you get out of being part of it.

The ACS Student Chapter at the University of Maryland is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at UMD who are interested in the field of chemistry. Our chapter is dedicated to promoting chemistry and its related fields through scientific excellence and rigor, professional mentorship, and meaningful community engagement.

We strive to provide members with career and educational guidance, cultivate networking opportunities within and outside our university, and develop a lasting commitment to service and outreach. The goal is to prepare you for your future career in STEM.

Membership is open to every major and every skill level. Whether you are certain you want a career in chemistry or you are still figuring it out, there is a place for you here.

Professional Development

We run resume workshops, mock interviews, and speaker events with chemists from industry and from the faculty. It is good practice for the skills that come up on grad school and job applications.

Mentorship & Networking

Get to know upperclassmen, alumni, and professors who have done what you are trying to do. It is how a lot of our members find research advisors, study partners, and friends.

Outreach & Service

We visit local schools, run demos, and take on service projects. You give back to the community and earn your service hours while you are at it.

Need extra help or specialized tutoring? We'll connect you with a private tutor.

Sessions are one-on-one and scheduled around your availability, so you can focus on the exact topics or courses you are stuck on. Fill out the sign-up sheet and we will match you with a tutor.

How to Join

Getting involved takes about three steps.

Register

Fill out the membership form to get on our roster and start getting updates about events.

Attend Events

Come to at least three events a semester. That can be a speaker event, community service, a lab tour, or a social gathering.

Give Back

Finish your service hours each semester through our outreach events and stay in good standing.

Membership Requirements

Be a current University of Maryland undergraduate or graduate student.
Be registered to take or have previously taken at least one CHEM or BCHM course at UMD.
Attend at least three events per semester and complete the required service hours.
Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA.

Who can join?

Any University of Maryland undergraduate or graduate student who is registered to take — or has already taken — at least one CHEM or BCHM course at UMD. Every major and every skill level is welcome. Beyond that, the main thing we look for is that you are excited about STEM, networking, and community service.

Do I need an official national ACS membership to join?

No. National American Chemical Society membership is entirely optional. Joining our UMD student chapter is separate, and you get the full benefit of chapter events, tutoring, and mentorship without it.

Do I have to be a chemistry major?

Not at all. The chapter is open to every major. Plenty of our members come from biology, engineering, public health, and elsewhere — if chemistry is part of your coursework or just something you find interesting, you belong here.

How many events do I need to attend?

At least three per semester, plus the required service hours. Those three can be any mix of speaker events, community service, lab tours, or socials — whatever fits your schedule.

Is tutoring free?

Drop-in study sessions are free and open to everyone, every Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Private one-on-one tutoring is paid, starting at $5 per one-hour session, and is scheduled around your availability.
